HOPEDALE — Park Commission heard two hours of resident criticism over Draper Field construction but made no formal votes. Mike Costanza, chairman, defended a $93,000 commitment to the site by Leone's, a contractor chosen without competitive bidding, saying the work fit budget and timeline constraints to start the baseball season. Residents Gordon Lewis, Brett Bouvier, and Mike Bresciani urged the commission to fund a $32,000 feasibility study and proper engineering before spending more money, arguing the current field lacks proper drainage and grading.
Stephanie Ridolfi, Athletic Director, said the high school cannot lose two seasons of play and asked for interim solutions. The commission has $107,000 available from prior gifts and scheduled a follow-up meeting in three weeks.
